Medical Foundation provides assistance for physician practices affected by disasters

In the wake of destruction left by tornadoes that hit Alabama on April 27, MASA expresses deep sympathy to all who lost loved ones and offers prayers for all those affected by these massive storms.

In support of the survivors, Steven P. Furr, MD, MASA president, and George C. “Buddy” Smith, MD, chairman of MASA’s Board of Censors, take this opportunity to let the physicians of Alabama know of assistance that is available through the Medical Foundation of Alabama to help restore their practices or homes that suffered damage from the storms.

While the original and still principal purpose of the Foundation is educational, after Hurricane Katrina, the purposes were expanded to include disaster relief assistance to physicians and their office staff who sustained damage because of a natural or civil disaster.

“The overriding goal of this program is to make sure that necessary and critical healthcare services are returned to a disaster area for the benefit of the community,” said Dr. Smith, family and emergency physician in Lineville.

To achieve this goal, healthcare professionals and providers in the disaster area must be able to rebuild and reopen their facilities and resume providing their services and programs.

The Board of Directors of the Foundation will make determinations concerning the selection of recipients and the disbursement of funds based on the following factors:
(1) Extent of damage or injury experienced as a result of the disaster;
(2) Resources available to the recipient to pay necessary costs of restoration in order to again provide healthcare and services to the communities affected by the disaster;
(3) Ability of the recipient to resume providing health care services without assistance from the program; and
(4) Effect that a loss of the recipient's services will have on the community.

Assistance through the Foundation is not limited to physicians. “The Foundation may make grants pursuant to this program to other non-profit or charitable organizations that are assisting health care providers affected by the storms,” added Dr. Furr, family physician in Jackson.  “The Foundation may also provide assistance to states or municipalities affected by such a disaster to help rebuild or repair damaged or destroyed health care programs and facilities.”
